China starts testing Sars vaccine on humans

Volunteers injected after successful animal trials

BEIJING - Chinese scientists have begun testing a Sars vaccine on four volunteers at a Beijing hospital, state media said yesterday, in what appears to be the first such experiment on humans.

The volunteers, all in their 20s, were injected with the vaccine on Saturday at the Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital under tight security, Chinese media reported.

They are among 36 volunteers who have agreed to serve as guinea pigs for the vaccine, which has already been tested on goats, horses and monkeys and prevented the animals from contracting the potentially deadly virus, the Beijing Youth Daily said.

The trial was conducted under tight security, with 'guards lining the hallway to the testing room', it reported.

Officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Health were present, it said, adding that the four volunteers were 'calm and smiling' before their injections.

A hospital official contacted yesterday said she could not confirm that the tests had taken place.

The Chinese vaccine was jointly developed by China's Science and Technology Ministry and the Beijing Kexing Vaccine Company, the Beijing Youth Daily said.

Goed werk van die chinezen nu maar hopen dat er geen uitbraak meer komt. Want 1 miljard chinezen kunnen veel schade aanrichten aan de wereld gezondheid.
